Service Description
This two day beginner class is an introduction to bowl turning and no experience is necessary. Although we will focus on developing the basic skills needed to turn a simple wooden bowl from "green" unseasoned log wood, it is much more comprehensive than Beginner Bowl Turning I. We will get more in-depth, learning about tool sharpening, tool selection, wood selection and proper bowl blank orientation, bowl blank mounting methods, instruction on all types of cuts and scrapes and bowl chucking options. We will also discuss dry bowl turning and final finishes. Working at a power lathe, students will learn how to properly execute bevel rubbing cuts and scraping techniques using a bowl gouge. We will also be using a detail gouge, parting tool and scraper, along with various lathe accessories, hand tools and measuring tools. Although this is a beginner class, it is also a great refresher course for the intermediate bowl turner. All tools, equipment, materials and supplies will be provided, however, students are required to provide their own face shield and wear it during class. Students may bring their own turning tools if they wish, but please note that tools with carbide cutters will not be used in this class.
